Browsing the Web Safely and Usefully

An older piece on getting more out of browsing — the search and safety habits still hold up.

"Surfing the internet" describes moving from page to page without a fixed destination — following links, seeing where they lead. It's a slightly dated phrase for something people still do constantly.

Browsing and surfing

Browsing means viewing pages on the web through a browser — the software that fetches pages and displays them. Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge are the common ones; all do the same essential job.

"Surfing" and "browsing" are used interchangeably. If a distinction is drawn, surfing suggests the more aimless version — following links out of curiosity rather than toward a goal.

Surfing versus searching

The genuinely useful distinction in the original article, and it still holds:

  • Searching is goal-directed. You have a question, you type it into a search engine, you evaluate results against what you wanted. It ends when you have the answer.
  • Surfing is exploratory. You follow links from wherever you happen to be, without a specific target. It ends when you stop.

Both are useful, for different things. Searching is efficient when you know what you're looking for. Surfing is how you encounter things you didn't know existed — which is precisely what searching can't do for you, since a search only returns answers to questions you already knew to ask.

What it's good for

  • Learning something adjacent. Following links from a subject you understand into one you don't is a genuinely effective way to widen what you know.
  • Research at low cost. Background reading on almost any subject is available without leaving your desk — a real change from what came before.
  • Finding what you didn't know to search for. The main advantage over goal-directed searching.
  • Keeping current. Following a subject over time, rather than only consulting it when you have a question.

Browsing safely

The practical habits worth keeping:

  • Check the address, not the page. A convincing-looking page proves nothing; the domain in the address bar is the thing worth reading. Phishing pages are copies of real ones, and the URL is usually where they differ.
  • HTTPS is the baseline, not a badge. When the original article was written, the padlock still distinguished sites. It no longer does — most sites have it, including malicious ones. Its absence is a warning; its presence proves only that the connection is encrypted, not that the site is honest.
  • Be deliberate about downloads. Files from unfamiliar sites are the most common way a machine gets compromised.
  • Keep the browser updated. Browser updates are largely security fixes. Postponing them indefinitely is the single easiest risk to remove.
  • Treat public Wi-Fi as untrusted. HTTPS covers most of the exposure, but it's still not where to do banking if it can wait.
  • Use different passwords, ideally through a password manager. One reused password turns any single breach into access to everything else.
  • Know what your history and cookies retain. Every current browser offers a private mode and a way to clear stored data — worth knowing where those are on a shared machine.

None of it is complicated. Most compromises come from skipping the ordinary precautions rather than from anything sophisticated.
